If studying music improves childrens academic scores in the other subjects, music will be considered much more important as a subject and further reduction of Music classes might be prevented. From this viewpoint, we surveyed the actual conditions of Music classes for pupils from the third to sixth grade at a public elementary school in Kagoshima City.---(1) And we compared the individual academic scores in Music of the third grade pupils with those in Arithmetic and Japanese Language in order to investigate the correlations between these subjects.---(2) The survey(1) shows that both boys and girls in the third grade are highly interested in Music and that while boys are getting less interested as they are promoted to the upper grades, girls tend to keep the same level of interest. At the same time, it shows the various reasons for their likes and dislikes of Music classes, which suggest how to improve the qualities of Music classes at elementary schools. Besides that the survey also shows that the 45.7% of the pupils are very busy taking plural private lessons after school. The survey(2) tells us that there is slight correlation between the pupils grades in Music and Arithmetic or those in Music and Japanese Language, but there is a little one between Arithmetic and Japanese Language. And a clear relationship is recognized between the grades of the pupils who take piano lessons and the grades of those who dont. So, it can be considered that the lessons of keyboards influence positively studying Arithmetic and Japanese Language and that, in other words, there is some relationship between Music and the other subjects.
